Choosing a flight school

The future pilot has to choose where to get his licence. Talking with instructors and students may help you decide on a school.

You shouldn't choose a school just for its prices, the quality of their teaching is important. Before making a decision, visit the school and talk with the staff, instructors and students.

The flight instruction and theory should be done as regularly as possible. This gives the best results and in the end, less time and money spent.

Is it difficult to learn to fly?

No, it is not difficult. To begin with you will fly the aeroplane supervised by the instructor.

Do I need to be physically fit?

No, you don't have to be physically fit.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

No, our instructors speak English, and all radio communication can be done in English.

How much does it cost a year to have a licence?

It depends, as normally you would fly 30 to 40 hours a year, which would cost some 3000 to 5000€ depending if you rent the aeroplane or it is your property, as well as the model of aeroplane you fly.

What should I do to maintain my licence valid?

You need to take a check flight every 2 years.

What should I do to maintain my medical valid?

You need a medical check at a medical center or doctor recognized by the civil aviation administration, every 60 months if younger than 30 years, every 24 months if younger than 50 and every year if older than 50.

Can I fly wherever I want?

Practically yes, although there are restricted areas and altitudes.

What types of aeroplanes can I fly?

With a Private Pilot's Licence you can fly any kind of single-engine aeroplane that doesn't require a type rating.

What is a rating?

A rating is an authorization to fly a specific type of aeroplane, for example a twin engine, as well as to fly in special meteorological conditions (instrumental flights). Also, ratings exist for different types of aerial work, for example instruction and cropdusting.

Can I land wherever I want?

Some airports exist where light aeroplanes are not allowed to land, but normally there is an alternative airport nearby that can be used instead.

After completing the course, what should I do to continue flying?

When you have your licence you can rent an aeropane, buy one, or become a member of a flying club.

Do you need a high level of physics and mathematics?

No, only basic knowledge of physics and mathematics is required.

Can I work with my Private Pilot's licence?

No, to be able to work you need a Commercial Pilot's Licence.

Can I fly as copilot?

Yes, if you don't get paid.

Can I fly outside of Spain?

Yes, as long as you speak English on the radio (or the native language).

Can I fly in foreign aeroplanes with my licence?

Yes, if the country is a member of JAR.

How much does it cost a year to have an aeroplane?

The price depends on the type of aeroplane, when it is built, the pilot's experience, type of security and hours flown per year. A normal size aircraft may cost about 8000€ a year, plus fuel.

Why is a shared aeroplane better?

An aeroplane has a number of anual costs, for example insurance and revisions, which makes it important that it flies as often as possible. If one pilot only flies 30 to 50 hours a year, the costs can be shared among several pilots.

Can I fly at night?

Yes, if you have a rating and the aeroplane is certified to fly VFR by night or instrument flights.

Can I fly with clouds?

Yes, if you keep a certain distance to them and have the terrain in sight at all times. That means you cannot fly IN clouds.

What do I need to be able to fly in any meteorological condition?

You need an instrument rating and an aeroplane that is certified for instrument flights.

How many exams are there?

There are 9 exams, which will be done in 2 days.

Are the exams difficult?

No, if you follow the classes they are not difficult.

Can I select when I take classes?

The hours are decided by all students, normally it will be 3 days a week, from 20 to 22.

How long does the Private Pilot course last?

Minimum 3 months, although it depends on the weather and the time you dedicate.

How long do I have to complete the course?

You will have 4 sittings, the exams you pass in the first sitting are transferred to the next, etc. However, if you haven't passed all in the 4th sitting, you have to take all exams once again.
Regarding the practical course, you have 2 years to finish it after having passed the theoretical exams.

How many times can I go to the same exam?

You can go to 4 sittings, if you haven't passed all 9 exams in the fourth sitting, you have to take all exams again.

In what consists the practical exam?

In the practical exam you will make a flight of 1.5 hours with an examiner from the CAA, and demonstrate the manoeuvers you have learned.

How much does it cost to rent an aeroplane?

It depends on the aeroplane; a Cessna 172 usually costs between 150 and 180€ per hour of flight.

Can I take my family, friends or colleagues with me?

Yes, you can fly with whoever you want.

What is an Instrument Rating (IR or IFR)?

An instrument rating allows you to fly in instrument meteorological conditions, that is, non-visual conditions. This includes flying in clouds. You'll need an aeroplane that is certified for instrument flight.

What is a Multiengine Rating (ME)?

A multiengine rating allows you to fly aeroplanes with 2 or more engines.

When can I start to fly?

Immediately, although you will need certain certificates first (e.g. medical). Normally we recommend that you get some classes of theory first.

Is there a specific number of hours of flight before I can fly solo?

No, though the instructor won't allow you to fly solo until you have learned some specific manoeuvers. These include safe takeoffs and landings. You should be able to maintain positive control of the aeroplane at all times, and to use good judgement.

Is flying safe?

A well-maintained and well-piloted aeroplane is at least as safe, if not more, than any other kind of transport.

What happens in the case of an engine failure?

Modern aeroplane engines are very reliable, making a failure extremely rare. However, should it happen, the aircraft DOES NOT just "fall out of the sky". You just have to do what you learnt with the instructor, select an appropriate field and land.

When do I need a medical certificate?

Before the first flying lesson. We recommend you to get it before starting the course, so as not to lose money in the case that you can't get the medical.

Before the flight instruction.

How do I get a Class II medical certificate

By passing a medical examination at an approved medical clinic or doctor.

What are the requirements for a Student's ID card?

The prerequisites are: minimum 17 years of age and a valid Class II Medical.
